This story is about how coral in the Red Sea is
severely suffering due to pollution. This coral has adapted to survive in
increased temperatures, which is promising for its continued existence, however
with pollution added into the equation, it is not looking good. This pollution
comes from a variety of human sources such as construction by neighboring
countries. Mote Marine in Sarasota has been partnered with Israeli researchers
for quite a long time and they are now moving from this problem to a more local
one. Mote Marine scientists are going to carry out tests on coral in Sarasota
in order to help combat a certain disease that is killing coral in Florida. And
there is a call to action at the end of the article to practice correct waste
disposal.

The issue here is that human behavior is
contributing to the death of coral all over the world. Improper disposal of
waste is adding to an already stressful environment where the coral doesn’t
only have to deal with increased temperatures, but now also pollution and it
can’t.

The marine researchers that conducted all of the
tests and that are currently searching for a solution are the ones facing the
problem. If they don’t find a way to slow pollution, coral may cease to exist.

This has been a rough year for teachers. The
Florida Education Association (FEA) is now in a leadership split because of
this. Joanne McCall’s position of president is being challenged by Frederik
Ingram and this turmoil could negatively impact the upcoming elections. The FEA
needs to work together to accomplish its goals and right now they are in no
position to do that. The move by Ingram to attempt to take over has caused a
rift in the association and they might not be able to help the Democrats, who
they are closely aligned with.

The issue here is that the association is
divided and this could cause their political agenda to crumble. They want to
secure a democratic seat in the upcoming elections and without this they are unable
to carry out their function.

The FEA’s members are the ones facing the
problem. Unless they can figure out a way to come together and move past this
leadership issue they are doomed.

Many children end up in foster care and
separated from their parents because of drugs or legal reasons. When this
happens for too long it can have serious negative effects on a child. The Early
Childhood Court is a faster way to find a safe home for a child. One of the
things it focuses on first is reuniting the child with his or her parent
through a rehabilitation course for the parent. If the parent recovers and
turns his or her life around they are able to be rejoined with their child. An
example was given with Sherrisa Scott, a woman who was arrested for drug
possession. who instead of going to jail went through this program and
completely changed her life and lives with her daughters again.

The issue here is that the opioid epidemic rages
on today and there is no end in sight for it. This epidemic ruins children’s
lives when their parents are wrapped up in it. The ECC is a way for children to
find better situations than the previous one that they were in.

The children are the one facing this issue,
because they are directly influenced by this epidemic and their futures are
being jeopardized.

Is there a viable future for the Van Wezel?

The iconic performing arts building known as the
Van Wezel in Sarasota is outdated and there is not a clear decision on what is
to be done with it. The Van Wezel is no longer sufficient for large productions
as it can’t handle what it needs to be able to. Some people want to keep it to
preserve the history of the city, and others want to tear it down and redo the
entire building. A compromise is being looked into, where parts of the building
will be kept in order to honor its existence.

The problem here is deciding what to do with the
Van Wezel. It can no longer serve its intended purpose, but some people want to
keep it around for its historical value.

The Sarasota Bayfront Planning Organization
faces this problem because they are the ones in charge of the decision of what
to do with the Van Wezel.

3. Everglades National Park has suffered due to Burmese
pythons for far too long. For the first time ever it is opening up to hunters
in order to try and get rid of these pythons for good. Superintended Pedro
Ramos claims that they have tried many avenues to get rid of the pythons
before, but none have been successful and that now it is time to be aggressive.
There is controversy over this decision from different environmental groups,
but Ramos believes this is the best way. The park is going to be open to hunters
24/7, but they have to stay away from the areas where visitors can go when the
park is open. Ramos hopes to eliminate the pythons, but there is no telling how
many there are or how long it will take.
4. The problem here is trying to eliminate Burmese pythons
from the Everglades. This is extremely difficult to do because they are
difficult to detect and no one knows how many of them are left.
5. Superintendent Pedro Ramos and the hunters that he hired
face this problem as they are going to be hunting the snakes for the foreseeable
future.

This leads to the controversial topic of global warming and if the heating of the worlds oceans is being caused by nature or anthropogenic sources. I personally agree that this is a major issue and a great opportunity to focus on. I'm really glad you chose to write about this topic as you overall did a good job!

However the first article is what made me the most interested due to my passion for fishing and the preservation of the oceans. I'm glad that more attention is being brought to the front, and your summary was very nice and overall all that you wrote was interesting and well done. Way to go!

ReplyDeleteThe articles you wrote about were very interesting. The fifth one really spoke to me though. I found it very interesting that the Everglades wants hunters to kill the Pythons. I thought these pythons were becoming extinct but I guess not. These pythons are making other animals extinct because they are killing them. Great job on your post!
